PSI Ghana commends Public Service Workers

The affiliates of the Public Service International in Ghana on the occasion of the World Public Service Day (WPSD) has extended its solidarity with all Public Service Workers, who, despite the precarious environment, continues to offer dedicated and quality public service to their citizenry.

A statement issued by the PSI and copied to the Ghana News Agency, stated that the WPSD was instituted by the United Nations in 2013 to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community.

It said the day also highlights the contribution of public service in the development process, recognize the work of public servants and also to encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

It stated that the day is being marked for the first time by the affiliate Unions of the PSI in Ghana, under the theme: “Yes to Effective State- Driven Public service, No to Harmful Tax Practices”.

It said the PSI underscores the importance of an effective tax administration system to the development of the country and as a panacea to the current economic challenges facing Ghana.

It further explained that such a system can help rake in the necessary revenue for the implementation of social protection policies and the creation of decent work for the unemployed Youth of the Country, among others.

The statement also called on the government to implement to the letter, existing legal regimes intended to fight against illicit financial flows and other dodgy and harmful tax practices such as discriminatory, retrogressive and unbridled tax exemptions that erode the revenue base of the government.
