Chiefs must do active politics – GCPP

The Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), wants chiefs to be given critical roles in Ghana’s governance process.

The party wants the constitutional provision that bars traditional rulers from participating in active partisan politics amended.

According to the GCPP, traditional rulers should not be excluded from the political process since they represent an important component of Ghana’s political history.

The party wants an upper chamber to be created in parliament for chiefs. Its 2012 Vice Presidential Candidate in the 2012 elections, John Amekah, told XYZ News that the second chamber should be made up of chiefs, eminent personalities, statesmen and retired technocrats.

“The second chamber ultimately represents the diversity of the people of Ghana and our traditions. In this respect, the ban on chiefs from participating in politics should be lifted by repealing the appropriate clauses in the constitution,” Amekah said.
