Ghana @ 50 Project left to rot

A public toilet facility started at Adansi near Asankare in the Asante-Akim South District as one of the landmark projects marking the country’s Golden Jubilee celebration (Ghana @ 50) has been left to rot.

The facility, which is about 85 per cent complete, is now totally covered by weeds while the people are forced to ease themselves in the bush.

A team of reporters of the Ghana News Agency, working on STAR-Ghana’s media auditing and tracking of development projects stumbled on the abandoned structure during a visit to the community.

Many of those interviewed said they were disappointed that the facility had been abandoned.

They said what was even more disheartening and scandalous was the huge amount of resources invested and the fact that it remained a need of the community.

Just a handful of households in the community have toilets and that should make a public facility a priority.

Mr Kwaku Asamoah Agyei, the Assembly member, said this was yet another example of state resources gone down the drain. He said the Assembly rejected a proposal for conversion of the structure into a community health planning and services (chps) compound.

Mr Agyei said this was after officials from the Assembly’s Works department had inspected it and recommended that the outstanding works should be finished to enable it to serve the intended purpose of improving sanitation.
