The Meteorological Department says the Harmattan condition, which engulfed the country on Boxing Day is likely to persist and intensified until January ending 2003.
It therefore advised the general public especially farmers, hunters, palm wine tapers and smokers to be careful in handling naked fire. Mr David Parry Osika, a meteorologist at the KIA Metro office who was briefing newsmen on the weather at the Airport said Europe is yet to enter the coldest season and this would result in an intensified dry weather condition over the sub-region. He said the country is currently experiencing longer nights and shorter days with the rate of evaporation very high. Mr. Parry Osika said the condition is affecting visibility and warned motorists who travel at dawn to be extra careful because of the visibility impairment.
He said the Harmattan wind carries contaminants and advised that all food and liquids should be covered and moisturisers applied to reduce the effect of the Harmattan on the skin. Mr Parry Osika however, said one positive aspect of the weather is the improvement of radio and Television waves, which enables people to receive clear transmission from neighbouring countries.
