The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) on Friday commended the NDC for a successful congress and the able manner it exhibited internal democracy.
GNUPS said contrary to the pre-congress speculation that the party would not find its feet after the election of the presidential candidate, the NDC had proved that it was capable of putting its house in order in spite of individual differences.
This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Jacob Amoako, Co-ordinating Secretary of the Union.
The statement, however, cautioned that Dr Kwesi Botchwey’s defeat should not create any division in the party but should spur him on to demonstrate that he was a mature and astute politician by joining forces with Professor Evans Atta Mills.
The union said this was necessary since the NDC needed internal democracy to sustain and move it forward.
To this end therefore, the Union called on all NDC supporters to put aside personal interests, eschew hypocrisy and self-aggrandisement to enable the party present a united front to contest the 2004 elections.
The Union also expressed delight at the interaction President John Agyekum Kufuor had with leadership of the majority and minority parties at the Castle and said the gesture showed that party political affiliations should not create animosity amongst Ghanaians.
GNUPS further called on Ghanaians to avoid conflict situations at home and work places but tolerate divergent views irrespective of sex, religious, ethnic or political affiliation since not one single person possessed all the knowledge and ideas.
On chieftaincy disputes, GNUPS appealed to traditional rulers to strive to win the confidence of their people by creating peace and harmony in their areas of jurisdiction.
The statement appealed to the government to pay more attention to issues concerning polytechnics.
