Breakfast meeting with Senior Nurse Managers

Dr. Linda Vanotoo, Greater-Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, has reiterated the need for nurses and midwives to show interest in pregnant women under their care.

She advised them to maintain the link between clinical care and public health continuum of care in order to improve services to ensure that mothers and babies survive pregnancy and delivery.

Dr. Vanotoo made the call at a breakfast meeting with Senior Nurse Managers (SNMs), aimed at promoting safe maternal and child health in the region.

She reminded the SNMs that pregnant women need the right assessment, before, during, and after labour, and therefore, charged them to provide accurate information on the progress of pregnant women during labour.

Dr. Vanotoo further charged SNMs to promote safe pregnancy and delivery through the continuous education of mothers, partners and the home support groups, in a congenial atmosphere free of intimidation.

This, she said, will go a long way to dispel misconceptions, beliefs and practices that have a negative impact and adverse effects on conception and childbirth issues.

Dr. Ebenezer Oduro-Mensah, Specialist in Family Medicine at the Out-Patient Department of the Ridge Regional Hospital, said haemorrhage is the main cause of maternal deaths in the region, and that other underlying causes include hypertensive diseases, ruptured uterus, anaemia, embolism, unsafe abortion and sickle cell diseases.
