Presidential staffer, Dr. Clement Apaak, has said that Ghanaians have a poor attitude towards waste management.
According to him, the current waste management crisis facing the capital city, Accra, is due, significantly to the attitude of Ghanaians towards managing the waste they generate at their homes.
Several communities in the Greater Accra region are engulfed in filth due to the inactiveness of waste collection companies.
These companies claim government owes them millions of Ghana cedis. They have virtually become dormant since landfill sites where these wastes should be dumped have been closed.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has indicated that some amount of money has been paid to the managers of some of these landfill sites to enable waste management companies to resume dumping refuse collected from the city.
But the crisis doesn’t seem to be disappearing anytime soon.
But speaking on Joy FM, Dr. Apaak said government is aware of the current crisis and is working hard to on a sustainable basis to tackle the waste situation.
He said if Ghanaians will better separate their wastes and not dispose of them at unapproved places, the current situation will improve.
