FSG calls for demonstration against Monsanto

The Food Sovereignty Ghana and Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums (COFAM) are calling people who are against the imposition of Genetically Modified (GM) foods on Ghanaians to join them in a march against Monsanto.

The demonstration labelled “The March against Monsanto” which is scheduled to commence on Saturday in Accra, is to call for a permanent end to the use of genetically modified organisms and other harmful agrochemicals used by “Big Agriculture companies such as Monsanto.”

A statement signed by Mr. Jason Tutu, a member of the Communications Department in Food Sovereignty Ghana, and copied to Ghana News Agency on Friday, noted that, “the substances in these foods carry known health risks such as organ damage, sterility, infant mortality, birth defects, autoimmune conditions, allergies and increased risk of cancer.”

It added that the protest would be held in more than 400 cities in 52 countries this year.

The statement said: “the health, environment and prosperity of the people is at stake, but the political class and some agents of the multinational corporations are so keen on imposing it on Ghanaians.”

“It is about time we raise our voices, and we shall raise our voices with our placards and banners,” it added.

The statement noted that the demonstration is timely since parliament is coming back from recess on May 28.
