The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, in collaboration with the Department of Waste Management, have distributed 240 waste containers to Basic, Senior High School and Training Colleges in the Metropolis to promote the waste management campaign endorsed by the Assembly.
Mr. George Frimpong, the Central Regional Head of Department of Waste Management, said this was to help control the indiscriminate littering of the environment.
He said the government with support from the Ghana- Netherlands Wash Programme, has begun distributing waste containers to schools.
Mr. Frimpong said each of the basic schools would be given two waste containers, Senior High Schools would be provided with three each with four for the Training Colleges, and that the bins would be emptied twice in every week.
He said Ghc5.00 and Ghc15.00 will be paid each month by the Basic and Senior High Schools respectively, to ensure smooth and frequent transportation of the waste to the final disposal site.
Ms. Priscilla Arhin, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, stressed the need for environmental cleanliness and condemned people who litter gutters and the environment, saying this was the cause of communicable diseases and epidemics.
She attributed the recent flooding in the metropolis to the choked gutters and drains and stressed the need for the drains to be cleaned regularly.
She urged teachers to educate students on the effects of filthy environment, as well as the importance of waste management.
Mrs. Rose Amoah, Coordinator for the Metro Education Directorate and School Health Education Programme who received the containers, thanked the government for the initiative towards waste management and urged the schools to keep the containers well to sustain the waste management campaign.
