THE GHANAIAN CHRONICLE

“J.H. Mensah to be removed…NPP move against his dictatorial tendencies”, is the banner headline of a Chronicle front page story which says in spite of the facade of unity it presents while confronting the NDC ‘juggernaut’, the Minority Group in Parliament is on the verge of a serious crisis that may tear it apart. The Chronicle says in an interview with newsmen in Accra, the NPP Member for New Juaben constituency, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman called for a system under which the leadership of the Minority Group will undergo an annual change based on the understanding that “Parliament is not only a law-making body but also a breeding ground for national leadership”. According to Mr Owusu-Agyeman, who is also spokesman on Foreign Affairs, the peaceful ‘change of baton’ should be such that the current Deputy Minority Leader, Mrs Gladys Asmah, Member for Takoradi, will take over from the leader, Mr J.H. Mensah, Member for Sunyani East, with another deputy chosen from the front bench of the group. GRI

In a back page story the Chronicle reports that a civilian member of the Forestry Department Task Force, Mr Peter Osai Harrison, armed with an AK 47 rifle he claimed was issued to him by the Castle, led a three-man demolition squad a week ago to unleash terror on workers of Muus Sawmill near Ofankor near Accra, leaving one person comatise and four others seriously wounded. According to the paper, Mr Harrison, who claimed to source his powers from the Castle, reportedly led two others in police uniform to attack the sawmill around midnight, broke the main gates and entered the yard to impound a vehicle suspected to have conveyed wood beams without proper documents.
