Artworks can solve Ghana’s sanitation challenges – Prof. Fosu

Professor Kojo Fosu, lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, has observed that recycled waste products used in various art works could contribute in addressing the country’s environmental and sanitation challenges.

He said discarded materials such as iced water bags, coconut husk; pieces of clothes, polythene bags, among others, were used by artists for creative artwork to depict reality.

Prof. Fosu made the observation at the launch of this year’s Art Exhibition by the School of Applied Art of the Takoradi Polytechnic in Takoradi on Thursday, under the theme, “Art and Sanitation: Promoting a Healthy and Sustainable Environment for Development”.

Prof. Fosu said whenever an art exhibition was mounted by academic artists; it was expected to offer insight into the state of the nation’s artistic tradition, especially when the exhibits on display represented works produced by professionals.

He noted that, artwork portrayed emotional reactions to certain comparable situations in life, and commended the students for transforming abstracts into reality.

The Dean of the School of Applied Art, Mr. Victor Kweku Bondzie Micah, said the exhibition was an innovation from selection of materials.

The artists who were drawn from the various polytechnics and universities in the country, displayed art works like fashion, ceramics, sculpture, and graphic designs among many others.
