Barber remanded for defiling 12-year-old girl

A 33-year-old barber, Samuel Mintah, who is accused of defiling a 12-year-old girl at Burma Camp, on Wednesday, appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Mintah pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Ms. Sedina Agbemava.

Mintah’s plea of not guilty, however, attracted uproar from the audience. This was after prosecution had told the court that the victim in question is nine weeks pregnant.

The court remanded the accused into police custody to reappear on May 21.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Kofi Atimbire, told the court that, the victim’s mother is the complainant.

Mintah, who is a family friend and a neighbor, resides at Recce junction at Burma Camp.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant sometimes leaves the family keys to the house with the accused.

During December last year, Mintah had sex with the victim at his shop, which doubles as his home.

According to prosecution, in January and February this year, the accused person also had sex with the victim.

Inspector Atimbire said about three week ago, the victim fell ill and the complainant noticed some changes on the victim and when she was quizzed, she mentioned Mintah as the one who had sex with her on three occasions.

Prosecution said a report was lodged with the Military Police and Mintah was nabbed and the matter transferred to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit in Accra.

On April 16, the victim was sent to the Police Hospital and it was detected that she was pregnant.

During Police interrogation, Mintah disclosed that he had had sex with the victim once.
