Easter: Accident kills 7 in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region recorded a total of seven deaths in three separate road accidents from Easter Friday to Easter Sunday.

Confirming this to Ultimate Radio, Eastern Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD, Chief Superintendent Samuel Tetteh, recounted that five persons died on Good Friday while another person died on the dawn of Saturday with another losing her life on Sunday all in motor accidents.

“On Easter Friday around 12:45 pm, an unregistered Toyota Corola run into four pedestrians at Kukurantumi; out of which three died on the spot with another dying in the hospital the following day.”

“That very evening, we recorded two deaths of two young men who were riding on a motorbike from Kwahu towards Anyinam. We have not been able to ascertain whether they were knocked down by a hit-and-run car; because we only picked the dead bodies without seeing the motorbike although we were initially told by eyewitnesses the motorbike was around. These were two young men believed to be in their thirties,” Chief Superintendent Samuel Tetteh narrated.

He added that on Sunday, a forty year old man who was on a motorbike with his wife and ten-year-old son, riding from Mpraeso to Nkwatia, run into a saloon car killing the wife on the spot.

“The man is in a critical condition at the theater of the Atibie Hospital with his son whose legs were fractured in the accident.”

But the Motor Traffic and Transport Department in the region says it cannot link all the accidents to the Easter festivities particularly in Kwahu, which is notable for the celebration.

The MTTD Commander blamed especially the incident which claimed four lives on a faulty clutch which pulled the car straight in the pedestrians. He reiterated the call on motor riders to obey traffic regulations particularly in the use of helmets while riding.
