Gov’t should stop wasting money on GYEEDA – Kuranchie

Kenneth Kuranchie, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight, says government should entirely scrap the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA).

He was commenting on media reports that months after the various GYEEDA modules were suspended to allow for a restructuring of the programme, something very fishy seems to be happening at the Agency.

Several people including the Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Abuga Pele and the Chief Executive of Goodwill International Group (GIG) have been indicted in the GYEEDA report which was presented to President John Mahama revealing the rot in the agency.

Mr. Abuga Pele, who was the National Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), now the GYEEDA and the GIG Chief Executive Officer are currently standing trial for their various roles which the Attorney General’s Department said, had caused huge financial loss to the State.

According to a New Crusading Guide publication on Monday, even though the proposed reforms have not been completed and GYEEDA Bill not even tabled in Parliament, advertisements have been placed by GYEEDA for bids for the ICT Module of the programme.

The publication wondered why the rush to restart only the ICT module of the programme when the announced internal reorganization and capacity building, proper legal framework and complete review of all the GYEEDA modules are yet to be completed.

Speaking on Oman FM, Ken Kuranchie called on the Mahama administration to “scrap” GYEEDA because to him, it has failed to accomplish the purpose to which it was established.

He argued that since the National Youth Employment Programme was changed to GYEEDA, it appears to be crippling as a result of the daunting challenges confronting the Agency.

According to him, government should not “waste” money on the GYEEDA but rather “redirect the monies to boost already existing traditional institutions.”
