The baby, Sandra Ekpe had been retrieved and handed over to her mother.

Mr. Dennis Fiakpui, the Akatsi Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the suspect, who resides at Dzodze, her hometown, is a trader.

He said Akpalu arrived at Hevi in the Akatsi-North District on March 24 this year, ostensibly as a pineapple merchant and was hosted overnight by the baby’s parents.

Mr. Fiakpui said the following morning, Akpalu who was cuddling the crying baby, while her host, the baby’s mother got ready to lead her to the Hevi market, she (Akpalu) vamoosed with the baby.

He said the baby’s parents raised the alarm, picked up by local radio stations, leading to Akpalu’s arrest in her home at Ablorme-Dzodze later in the day.

She has since been put before the District Magistrate Court at Dzodze, for child stealing and remanded in police custody until April 28, this year.

The Court, presided over by Mr. Anthony Abebrese, ordered that Akpalu be sent for mental alertness verification at a health facility due to the inconsistencies in her plea.
