Update: Uncompleted hotel collapses; 1 dead, 4 others feared dead

An uncompleted building of the Grand View Hotel at Nii Boi Town, near Abeka Lapaz in Accra has collapsed.

Reports suggest about five people, a woman, two children and some men were in the building. One person has so far been rescued by rescue team at the site.

A member of the team has also reportedly collapsed and has been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses say the 7-storey uncompleted building collapsed at about 4:15am Thursday morning.

Mr John Mark Eshun, whose house is opposite where the incident happened told Accra based radio station, Joy FM that he saw one man coming out of the building at about 4:15am to wash his face.

“The building started collapsing just after that…the whole building started collapsing… all the building was coming down, it started dropping and all the area was filled with dust. That is what happened,” Mr Eshun said.

Security personnel made up of the police, the national ambulance and fire services are on the ground hoping to rescue some people trapped under the debris.

Dozens of people have gathered at the scene.
