E/R recorded 920 human right complaints in 2013

The office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in the Eastern Region recorded 920 human rights and abuse related cases in 2013.

According to the Eastern Regional Director of CHRAJ, the complaints were in the areas of children and women’s rights, economic and social rights, civil and political rights and property rights.

Mr Mensah said his outfit recorded 500 child-right related cases, 136 cases on women’s rights, 106 complaints on property rights and 26 cases each were recorded on civil and criminal cases.

He said the report was gathered from all the 13 district offices of the Commission in the region, with the Kwaebibirem District leading with 129 cases, followed by New Abirem with 123 and Nsawam with 120 cases.

Mr Mensah said the records indicate an increase in child labour in the region, and described the situation as serious and urged those involved to desist from the practice.

Mr Shadrack Majisi, Public Education Focal Person and a Senior Investigator said CHRAJ organised a total of 508 public programmes across the region and formed human rights clubs in some basic schools within the New Juaben Municipality.

He said his outfit had also initiated a non scoring course on basic human rights to train and educate students in nursing and midwifery institutions in the region.

Mr Majisi said the commission will soon introduce a human rights protection programme for the security agencies and added that more public education programmes on human rights would be held throughout the region.
