A manager, Benjamin Nti, on Monday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing Ghc28,214.00 belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Nti is said to have used the money collected from clients to operate his private business. Charged with stealing, Nti has pleaded not guilty and the court presided over Ms Ellen Amoah has admitted Nti to bail in the sum of Ghc50,000.00 with two sureties one to be justified.
He is to reappear on February 19.
Prosecuting Chief Inspector Charles Chester told the court that the complainant was a retired human resource manager and currently an agent of ECG assigned to some designated areas at Amasaman in Accra.
Nti was employed to collect monies belonging to ECG from cashiers who collect monies as payment of bills from customers. He was also assigned to collect monies from these cashiers on a daily basis and pay into the company’s account at Nsawam.
Prosecution said on January 14, 15, 16, and 17 this year, the accused received the monies from the various cashiers totaling Ghc28, 214.10 but failed to pay into the company’s account.
Chief Inspector Chester said the complainant detected the anomaly and confronted Nti. Nti could not give any tangible explanation.
According to prosecution, the complainant reported the matter to the Police and Nti was arrested. Chief Inspector Chester said Nti in his caution statement stated that he had invested the money into his private company.
