Gov’t must focus on the poor in 2014 – Opanyin Agyekum

Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum, a lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon has asked government to include making the lives of the underprivileged better in its 2014 resolution.

He said the less-privileged has been abandoned for so long; ‘it is time to focus on them’. Opanyin Agyekum has also asked politicians to put aside politics and help in building the nation.

Contributing to a panel discussion on ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, he told Kwami Sefa-Kayi that “politics in the country is doing more harm than good”.

He said instead of focusing on what will lead to development in the country; politicians will rather take sides with their political party, whether they are right or wrong.

“In 2014 this attitude must stop. There are people suffering in the grassroots and so in 2014 government as well politicians should concentrate on nation building than politicking…They should also put emphasis on agriculture and how to better the lives of the poor,” he added.
