Peace should not remain a dream

The Most Reverend Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Catholic Bishop of Konongo-Mampong, has urged the nation to strive to make peace a reality and not a mere dream.

He said it was a pity that more than 2,000 years after the ascension of Christ into heaven, the peace He spoke of continued to remain an elusive phenomenon – the world plagued with a slew of problems and indignities, including conflicts and wars.

There is the need for the people to appreciate that peace is not necessarily the absence of war and that although, like many other countries, there is no war in Ghana there is, no peace in homes and families.

“There is no peace between brothers and sisters, between parents and children, between husbands and wives. There is no peace between rival political parties.’

This, he said, was why they should accept to do everything to change things as they celebrated the birth of the “Prince of Peace”.

The Most Rev Osei-Bonsu, who is the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in his Christmas message, asked the nation to overcome the unbridled love for money and spiraling corruption.

“If we want to enjoy the peace brought by Christ, then in the coming year we will need to tackle corruption, which is spreading like a canker in our society.”

He reminded Ghanaians that there could never be peace when “we are engulfed in corruption”.

He said there was therefore the need to focus on helping everybody to uphold the values of integrity, sincerity and truthfulness.

It is important for all to accept to be guided in their consciences by integrity and honesty to put the country on the path of development and enduring peace, Bishop Osei-Bonsu, added.
