Mahama is the luckiest ever but… – Kwabena Agyepong

“If I were to be in his shoes; having benefitted from President Kufuor, benefitted from President Rawlings, benefited as the Vice President to Prof Mills, I would have moved quickly…”

Aspiring General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong says President John Dramani Mahama should have by now passed ‘first and second gear’ of achievements in his administration ‘with the kind of experience he has gathered’ so far in politics and governance.

The Press Secretary to former President Kufuor was analyzing the performance of the Mahama-led administration and assertions by the ruling party that growth and development were at a standstill in the country because of the election petition case.

Speaking on ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwabena Agyepong classified “the current President as the luckiest ever” but does not understand why he is not making use of the experience he has gathered.

“He was a minister during the era of President Rawlings, when I was the Press secretary to the President (Kufuor); he (Mahama) was the minority spokesman on communications; he was also Vice President in the administration of Prof Mills before becoming president…I would have expected that having benefited from all these experiences, he would be doing better and not blame his inability to perform on the election petition,” he said.

Mr. Agyepong strongly believes one of the reasons that contributed to the ‘slow performance’ of President Mahama was his choice and selection of some of his Ministers and appointees.

According to him, some of them lacked the experience and the know-how; and appeared to be square pegs in round holes.

“He started off on the wrong foot, and that has affected implementation of certain things. It appeared he was not decisive enough and was not sure what to do… let’s be serious with our politics because Leadership is very critical” he pointed out.
