President John Mahama says his government is working hard to ensure the Ghanaian economy does not spiral out of gear in 2014.
Mr Mahama says the national economy can be likened to a family setting where it is imprudent and problematic to leave above one’s income.
“As a nation, we must also live like a family. If you are spending more than your mother and father are earning, then there is a problem. They will go into debt and eventually people will send them to court and the judge will ask that they bring them”.
According to him, as the government strives to improve the state of the economy, Ghanaians must also be ready to pay their taxes to help government balance its budget for infrastructural development.
Addressing staff at the former seat of government, the castle, at this year’s annual party for presidential workers, Mr Mahama said: “As a nation, we have to balance our expenditure with our income and that is why our citizens must pay their taxes”.
He added that: “…If you import items into the country and they levy taxes, don’t try and dodge duty and smuggle the goods into the country so that government can get the needed revenue to build the schools and hospitals and deliver on the other obligations that government have”.
