College of Physicians calls for consultation on sponsorship

Professor George Wireko Brobby, President of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), has called for a stakeholder consultation on how to sponsor doctors who are undergoing specialist training at the college.

He said the issue of funding has often agitated the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) when government refuses to sponsor candidates at the college.

Prof Wireko Brobby made the comment at the launch of the 10th Anniversary of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra.

The two-week anniversary and annual general meeting activities are on the theme: “A decade of medical Postgraduate Specialist Training”.

Prof Wireko Brobby stated that due to the increasing number of candidates the question of funding by other stakeholders other than government has become more imperative.

He said the college was established in 2003 by law- Act 635 to cover all its operations after many years of GMA admonition for a postgraduate specialist training college.

Prof Wireko Brobby noted that this would nib in the bud the issue of brain drain of doctors.

He said the greatest strengthen of GCPS lies in its academic programme. Dr Antoinette Bowan, Chairperson of the planning committee for the anniversary enumerated the programmes and activities line up for the celebrations to include public lecture on Wednesday, December 4, TV Discussions on Thursday December 5, and health walk on Friday December 6.
