University of Ghana launches UG Cruz-Card

The University of Ghana (UG) in collaboration with MakYoung Limited, officially launched the New UG ID Card dubbed ‘The UG CRUZ-CARD’ in Accra on Thursday,

The identity card, which is also a Visa enabled prepaid card, access control card and a library card for students and staff of the institution, seeks to eliminate cash handling as well as eliminate the carrying of multiple cards.

Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Ghana said the use of technology can be used to transform society.

He said the introduction of the identity card will provide students the opportunity to access information and transact business, across the globe.

Prof. Aryeetey commended MakYoung Limited and other stakeholders for contributing their efforts in turning the idea born into a reality.

Ms. Holly Jones, Visa Business Development Manager for West Africa, revealed that the programme is the first of its kind in Ghana, adding to the few of such cards implemented within universities across the world.

“We hope that the card improves student life by driving conveniences and increasing security such that it becomes an integrated part of campus life”, she said.

Mr. Henry Benyah, Director, MakYoung Limited, expressed the need for UG being the premier university, to lead this initiative.

He said the card has been designed to add value to the community of Students and Staff as well as enjoying financial flexibility.

Mr. Benyah expressed his gratitude to management of the University of Ghana for the partnership in delivering this innovation, and hoped it will greatly enhance lives of the institution.
