NGO donates books to Nuugua Community Library

Perfector of Sentiments (POS) Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that promotes youth development, human rights and social justice for collective development in Ghana, on Saturday donated quantity of books to Nungua Community Library, in Accra.

The donation forms part of the 10th anniversary of the library on the theme: “Reshaping school children and the benefit of public through the use of library.”

The library which is part of a series of libraries founded in Accra by Mrs Kathy Knowles, a Canadian.

Mr Jonathan Osei Owusu, Executive Director-POS Foundation, said: “Reading contributes to the totality of a person especially children… To develop a nation, we need a well informed citizen (and this) can be achieved through reading.”

He expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of library facilities in Teshie-Nungua, saying he could only count three libraries for more than 20,000 people in the area.

Mrs Knowles called on government to support libraries since “it is a place where young children can be transformed to dream big.

She noted that there is no better place than a library because it helps children to be imaginative.

Mrs Rosetta Addison Sackey, Nungua Municipal Director of Education, whose speech was read on her behalf, said: “Libraries provide quiet a decent and serene environment for learning. It is a good avenue for conducting research and gaining more knowledge on the subject matter.”

She asked school children to take advantage of the ultra-modern library to spend their leisure time to improve upon their vocabulary.

The jubilant school children entertained the gathering with a variety of cultural display, which attracted protracted applause and standing ovation.
