Ghana to experience another eclipse

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts wishes to remind all Ghanaians of the impending partial hybrid solar eclipse that would be experienced in Ghana and other parts of West Africa on November 3, 2013.

According to a member of the African Astronomical Society, Professor Emmanuel Amamoo-Otchere, the rare natural phenomenon will happen at 22 minutes past 1 p.m.

Professor Amamoo-Otchere says “there will be partial darkness, similar to dusk, and the eclipse will be seen in Eastern America, sliding to West Africa and finally dissipating in Central Africa”.

“Those along the coast, from Half Assini to Aflao, will experience a wave of darkness in the skyline of a duration of a minute or two. He said inland, the phenomenon would be experienced in the northern parts of the country, as far as Burkina Faso.

The Ministry appeals to all Ghanaians not to forget to wear their eyeshades when watching the phenomenon. We also urge those with the shades to share its usage with friends and others.

The lives of Ghanaians are precious and should be jealously guarded. In this respect, we appeal to drivers and the motoring public to be mindful of road safety regulations and be cautious on the roads. If you want to witness it, park, watch, continue.

Ghanaians are entreated to go about their normal activities without any hindrance. Tourism and hospitality service providers such as hotels and restaurants are also advised to organise special traditional drumming and dance programmes to entertain tourists while they are watching and snapping pictures of the natural phenomenon. Religious bodies are also encouraged to organise similar events.

In line with our tradition, we urge all citizens to extend the proverbial Ghanaian hospitality to tourists who will be in the country to experience this rare phenomenon. We also invite international tourists to make Ghana the choicest destination to experience this unique occurrence.
