Asabee fights Sir John over election guidelines

Former Information Minister in the erstwhile Kufuor Administration, Asamoah Boateng, has questioned moves by the Chief Scribe of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to superintend over the upcoming internal elections and at the same time contest for re-election.

According to the former Mfantseman West NPP Member of Parliament, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John should go by the convention and relegate the duty of presiding over the elections to a constituted election committee. By so doing, in his view, it would provide the level playing field needed for the elections to be conducted freely and fairly devoid of acrimony.

“…after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the duty of the General Secretary was to communicate what transpired, and the decisions of the meeting; but he did not do this. All we heard was that he has brought guidelines. The guideline falls short of addressing many important things like, the role of office holders wanting to be re-elected and at the same time supervise the elections”.

“In this case, he is standing for elections. He calls himself the anointed General Secretary and as to who anointed, I don’t know. As we are going for elections, he wants to run for elections and conduct the elections too. You are a judge in your own court and the executioner in your own judgment. I think it is not proper,” Asamoah Boateng argued on Okay Fm, during a telephone interview on recent happenings within the opposition party.

Asabee, as he is popularly known, further appealed to leadership of the party to hand the organization of the elections to an election committee since over 90% of the national executives are running for various positions, including re-election.
