Tarzan: Is Mahama’s “fire fighting” style working?

Chief Policy Analyst at the Ghana Institute of Public Policy Options (GIPPO), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, has questioned the “fire fighting governance” style of the Mahama administration.

He wonders if such a style inures to the interest and benefit of Ghana.

The former Ghana@50 Secretariat CEO quizzed on Monday: “…Is this country’s interest being well served by the type of governance; of fire fighting governance; of always waiting for the last minute until people are at the point of withdrawing their labour before government actually fulfils promises and agreements that it has signed onto”.

Dr. Wereko-Brobby, who was speaking about the ongoing strife between organised labour and the government, did not sound enthused about the way the country is being run.

He wondered why the government has entered into so many labour agreements with various unions, but has not fulfilled any of those agreements.

“…If for no proper reason, they’ve gone on strike, that’s fine, but here is the situation where nurses have not been paid for years; teachers have not been paid for years, the excuse is being given of biometric; why go into negotiation if you have no intent of fulfilling it?” He queried on Joy FM.

Making reference to a reprimand by national security advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, which has angered organised labour, Dr. Wereko-Brobby warned that: “…We should be very very careful [with] these populist things. There should be logic, consistency and above all founded in the law of the land”.
