Utility tariffs: Koomson ‘bought’ by PURC to fight TUC – Agana

The Chairman of the Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL), Wilson Agana, has accused fellow labour comrade, Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of labour (GFL), of fronting for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to foist the recently increased utility tariffs on the public.

Agana told Strict Proof on Radio XYZ that he has heard rumours suggesting Koomson has been influenced by the PURC to counter the stance of organised labour concerning the recent tariff hikes.

The Ghana Trades Union Congress and other labour unions, except the Ghana Federation of Labour, have kicked against the 79% and 52% hikes in electricity and water tariffs effective October.

The TUC has given the Government a 10-day ultimatum to slash the increment by a third, or face the anger of organised labour.

The TDCL has already demonstrated against the increments.

The GFL has, however, condemned the strike threats and demonstrations by the other unions as “populist and hypocritical”.

Agana believes Koomson has taken an opposing stance to other labour unions because he has been allegedly bought by the PURC to do its bidding.

He said Koomson is a “confused” person who keeps shifting the goal post on the matter and so wonders what could be motivating him to do so.
