Akufo-Addo may not run for president again

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Temakloe, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cast doubt over the speculation that Nana Akufo-Addo will contest for the 2016 presidential candidature of the NPP.

In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues” Dr. Nyaho-Temakloe is not alone. Many party insiders say that they don’t believe that Nana will throw his hat into the race.

A member of Parliament who spoke to “The Insight newpaper” off record said “Nana is not a fool. He is seasoned politician and he knows that the best time to leave the stage is when the applause is loudest.

“He has earned praises from far and near and after years of struggle he has gained the stature of a statesman. “Why will he want to throw all that away by contesting for the flagbearership again?” he asked.

One of the reasons why Nana may not join the race is the failure of his supporters to push through the early congress agenda at two meetings of the National Executive Committee.

Although Nana is believed to be very popular in the NPP, this failure signals the growing strength and influences of his opponents.

Another problem with the Nana ticket is that it has been coupled with the candidature of Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and Mr. Owusu Afriyie for the positions of National Chairman and General Secretary respectively.

Both Jake and Owusu Afriyie are said to be fairly unpopular in the party now and the coupling would harm Nana Akufo Addo’s candidature.

Nana has said that he is taking a rest for awhile and would announce his intentions later.

For now many party loyalists are just waiting for the announcement with bated breath.
