The All Africa Students Union (AASU) on Friday congratulated teachers on the Africa continent on the occasion of the World Teachers Day celebration slated for October 5.
A statement signed by Mr Awaah Fred, Secretary General of AASU and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said majority of teachers on the continent discharge their duties under stringent conditions and therefore deserve commendation.
It said a report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) had revealed that three out of four countries in sub-Saharan Africa are faced with drastic shortage of primary teachers.
“It is therefore incumbent on us all particularly those who have been entrusted with the resources of the state to make sure that the pillars of our development which include education are solid, safeguarded and protected,” it said.
The statement also called on African governments to train more qualified, valued and motivated teachers to ensure quality education for solid and lasting peace essential for sustainable development.
It also commended UNESCO for its relentless efforts in ensuring quality and accessible education to all particularly in Africa.
