There are better things to do than to demonstrate – Pratt

Several Ghanaians are calling for pressure groups like the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) and Committee for Joint Action (CJA) to protest against the recent hikes in utility tariffs.

This call comes on the heels of PURC (Public Utilities Regulatory Commission) announcement of 78.9% and 52% increment in Electricity and Water.

However, Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr. has questioned why the two groups should be the only ones who should embark on demonstration when the increment affects every Ghanaian.

“Why should we be the only ones to embark on demonstrations? – as if the problem affects only one person… some even laugh at you during demonstrations; they will not take part,” he bemoaned.

According to him, ‘even assembling’ the people to demonstrate becomes a problem. Referring to past demonstrations he has participated in which to him yielded no fruits; he doesn’t think it should continue especially when those affected sits aloof.

Contributing to panel discussions on Friday’s edition of ‘Kokrokoo’ Kwesi Pratt added: “If that is how demonstrations are going to be held in this country, nothing will come out of it and the problems will continue to exist. For as long as we turn to think that demonstrations are for particular groups of people, this country will never change. This attitude needs to change…there are better things to do to bring change”.
