Former Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith, has stated that the Special Forces unit of the Ghana Armed Forces was formed to handle situations like the Kenyan terror attack.
According to the former Defence Minister, the unit is trained to deal promptly with emergencies like the Kenyan example.
He also revealed that it was the Kenyan Special Force that were “mobilized to stabilize the situation in Kenya…”
“We [Ghana] should make sure that we have intelligence at any one time so that when a situation comes our way, we can handle it very fast and properly,” he cautioned.
Lieutenant-General Smith also said the situation in Kenya should be an alert for Ghanaians to be more security conscious. “This is why I say that security is everybody’s business, the 25 million people in Ghana are all part of the security system; anything that you see or hear that is unusual find somebody to tell…”
The formation of the Special Forces unit two years ago raised eye brows among a section of the public and some political parties who feared the real intention for the formation of the unit.
