Statement: Awoonor’s death “tragic” – PPP

The PPP has learnt the tragic death of Professor Kofi Awoonor, the former chairman of the Council of State in the Kenyan shooting incident.

The PPP wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the family of the great poet and academic.

While we condemn the dastardly acts of terrorism by any group, the Kenyan shooting incident and similar attacks on the continent bring into sharp focus the threat to our democracies and free societies in Africa from fundamentalist groups.

The adoption of unorthodox means of seeking political, social and economic redress is real and present with us.

We urge all African governments to pay serious attention to the pockets of these terrorist threats and take immediate and practical measures to deal with social, political and economic exclusion, inequalities, unemployment, ignorance, poverty, diseases, unfair distribution of national wealth and corruption.

Signed

Kofi Asamoah-Siaw

National Secretary
