Nigerians in Ghana demonstrate over “illegal” community elections

Some Nigerians on Saturday staged a demonstration at their country’s High Commission in Ghana’s national capital, Accra, to protest what they described as the Commissioner’s divide and rule tactics.

The disgruntled Nigerians accused the High Commissioner of meddling in the election of executives for the All Nigerian Community in Ghana.

The group is the umbrella body that covers all Nigerian groups in Ghana.

Its Spokesperson, Francis Okporokpo, told XYZ News in an interview that Commissioner Ademola Oluseyi Onafowokan is interfering in the whole election process, which had hitherto, been independent of the High Commission’s influence.

He said despite a Court injunction on the election, the High Commissioner is bulldozing his way through.

“…The High Commissioner is still insisting on going on with the election and so we are saying no. we’ll protest it. We’ll do everything we can do to make sure that the courts are obeyed,” he said.

Mr. Okporokpo described the action of the High Commissioner as “illegal” because there is an existing group of executives who cannot be brushed aside unilaterally.

Police officers were called to the Commission to ensure calm as the elections went on under the supervision of the High Commission.
