Rawlings? Office replies Information Minister

The office of former President Jerry John Rawlings has denied as false a statement issued by the Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, that allegedly sought to create the impression that recent reports on assassination plot on the life of the ex-president was a fabrication.

A release signed by Mr Victor Smith, Special Assistant to the ex-President and Director of Public Affairs claimed that latest report received through an intelligence source in Canada with close links t security operatives in Togo was in tandem with several earlier reports received both home and abroad, all confirming the same information.

He said if intelligence agencies in Ghana claim they were not already privy to these, they should investigate the matter independently to avert any unfortunate national calamity. Mr Smith described the alleged dismissive reaction of government as unfortunate, showing lack of serious commitment to safeguard the security of the former President.

He alleged that some plain clothed individuals identified to be military persons had been made to replace part of the regular Police personnel guarding the ex-President. On recent meeting between ex-President Rawlings and former President Clinton, Mr Smith said the office of former President Rawlings could confirm from authentic sources that government denials of various unsuccessful attempts t scuttle the meeting did not have any substance whatsoever.
