8 dead in Oti river disaster

Eight women perished when a boat capsized on the Oti river in the Volta Region Saturday.

About nineteen people were on board the boat which was returning from Wulembo to Dambai, when the incident occurred.

Detective Corporal John Annor of the Dambai Criminal Investigations Department who confirmed this to Joy New said the women had gone to harvest yams and were returning with their produce to Dambai at 7:00 pm.

The boat hit a stamp in the river causing the boat to sink.

A rescue team from the Ghana Navy stationed in the region was called but the boat had sunk.

The eight who are all women got drowned. He says three bodies have so far been retrieved.
