Customs to discipline officer after 7 years

Mr Isaac Ofoe Apronti, Acting Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), on Monday, said the Division was yet to institute disciplinary action against Evans Gu, who assaulted Faustina Eworho in 2006.

He said Gu, a Custom official, assaulted Eworho at Aflao in March 2006 and was made to pay part of her hospital expenses by the Aflao Office, however, a report on it was forwarded to the head office in December 2006 and since then no disciplinary action had been taken against him.

Mr Apronti, who appeared before the Judgment Debt Commission in the matter of payment of compensation of GH¢26,000.00 judgment debt to Faustina Eworho, said a disciplinary committee would be put in place by the close of the week and its recommendations would be implemented to the letter.

He assured that the Commission that the committee would complete its task within one to three months.

Mr Justice Yaw Appau, the Judgment Debt Commissioner wanted to know if it was proper for the Custom Office at Aflao to ask the recalcitrant officer to pay the hospital bills of his victim without any further action.

The Customs Commissioner said it was not proper for them to have done that.

The Sole Judgment Debt Commissioner advised that in future proper administrative measures should be put in place to avoid such situations.

He appealed to the Customs Division to make their findings available to the Commission when completed.

“Security agencies have to exercise restraint in the performance of their duties,” the sole Commissioner stated.

Mr Dometi Kofi Sokpor, Counsel for the Commission, said the assault resulted in Eworho incurring fractures in her lower limbs.

He said due to that her husband divorced her as she was not able to provide the usual services he needed.
