Prof. Mills is not yet a hero – K. B. Asante

A senior citizen and one-time Secretary to Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, K. B. Asante says the late President John Evans Atta Mills is not yet a national hero.

“I must be frank…perhaps it is too early to define his status exactly. Yes, he was a great man, a leader who had so many qualities but in my view, a hero is at the pinnacle, and it is too early to say,” he said.

Mr. K. B. Asante is urging the general public to compare the works of the late president to that of past nationalist and heroes of the country before referring to him as a national hero.

“Just as if you asked whether Kwame Nkrumah was a hero in1966, you would have had mixed reactions…. Let us relax and compare what he (Prof Mills) tried to do, what he achieved and what others have done.

Mr. K. B. Asante defined a national hero as a person, who has helped in the fight against poverty, ignorance and oppression to improve the lives of the people.

He proposed for a committee made up of statesmen and women to be set up in order to identify persons who have contributed immensely towards the development of the country politically, socially, and economically.

Mr. K. B. Asante was speaking to Radio Gold last week.
