Bus Runs Over Fire Officer

A 33-year-old Sub-Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) stationed at Nkawkaw, was killed instantly on Monday by a Kumasi-bound Ford bus while helping to put off fire on a Benz bus at Amanfrom, near Nkawkaw.

Sub-Officer Michael Obiri died when the driver of the bus, ignored his signal to reduce speed and ran over him at the spot where his colleagues were fighting to save a Benz bus number AS 6509N, which caught fire while being washed.

According to the Nkawkaw District Operational Officer of the GNFS, Mr David Amponsah, the deceased, who was among a five-man team dispatched to the scene of the fire outbreak, was detailed with a colleague to control the on-coming traffic on either side of the Nkawkaw-Kumasi highway while the rest fought the fire.

He said when the Ford bus, with registration number GR 2961T, speeding from the Kumasi direction was signalled by Obiri to slow down, he ignored him and ran over him while the other officer had to jump away to escape death.

Mr. Amponsah said the driver of the bus, Kwame Nti, who failed to stop, sped off and later reported himself to the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) at Nkawkaw.

The officer in-charge of the MTTU, Mr Ben Wordui confirmed the accident to the GNA and said Nti had been placed in police custody to help in their investigation while the body of Obiri had been deposited at the Kwahu Government Hospital at Atibie for autopsy.
