Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, has recommended that the tenure of officials of security agencies should be sustained to aid transition after elections.
According to Professor Mike Ocquaye, security officials will be able to stay apolitical and aid in smooth transitions in the country, if their tenure is secured.
The former Dome-Kwabenya MP decried the existing practice where security chiefs are changed almost immediately, when new administrations take office.
Prof. Ocquaye made the suggestion in Accra on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at a two-day workshop organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs, under its Ghana Political Parties Programme. He chaired the function.
The IEA over the years has succeeded in bringing the major political parties together through its Ghana Political Parties Programme, to consider drafting and the amendment of bills originating from the governance think tank.
These have included the Public Funding of Political Parties Bill, the Political Parties Bill and more recently the Presidential Transition Bill.
Members of the Subsidiary Legislation, Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committees of Parliament are assessing the Presidential Transition Act 2012.
The parliamentarians are expected to take critical look at the proposed amendment of Presidential Transition Act 2012 at the end of the workshop.
