Robber-rapist jailed 110 years

A 25-year-old man who robbed a management consultant of his personal belongings and raped his wife has been slapped with a 110-year sentence.

Cletus Ofori was sentenced to 90 years on three counts of robbery and 20 years to conspiracy to commit crime by an Accra Circuit Court. He is to serve his sentences concurrently.

According to the prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Reindorf Agyemang, on July 18, 2011 at about 1am the complainant, a management consultant, was sleeping with his wife when Cletus and two others armed with knives, cutter and a metal bar invaded the household.

Cletus and his accomplices then seized a number of personal items belonging to the couple. These included three laptops, mobile phones, sets of jewelleries, a Sony DVD player, a Casio digital camera, a pen drive, a Kente cloth and cash in cedis and euros; namely GH¢4,620 and €600.

Not satisfied with their one-hour work’s loot, Cletus and his accomplices seized the consultant’s wife, raped and molested her. To top it all, they also beat up the family.

DSP Agyemang said a week after the terrible incident on July 23, 2011, the police received a tip-off which helped them to arrest Cletus at his hideout at a student hostel at Bubuashie, a suburb of Accra.

A search conducted in Cletus’ room fetched five DVD players, a television set, a Samsung woofer, 10 wrist watches, a video game, pen drives and the items stolen from the Adenta couple.

DSP Agyemang said the complainant, who had initially reported the robbery to the Lakeside Police, reported to the Accra Regional CID and identified the Nokia phone, kente cloth and one of the pen drives as his.

“The complainant again pointed out Cletus as one of the robbers who attacked and robbed him and his family.”

The Accra Circuit Court which heard the case was presided over by Justice Francis Obiri Yeboah.
