MP advocates development of Digya National Park

Mr Dominic Napare, Member of Parliament (MP)for Sene East, has noted that the Digya National Park has a lot of potential, which could be tapped for national development.

He said this could be done by resourcing the park with the needed logistics, marking the facility as a tourism destination, constructing internal graveled roads and foot trails for game viewing.

Mr Napare who made the call in a statement on the floor of Parliament, said the park is unique as it spans traditional, political and regional boundaries and is national in character; and its development would be of immense benefit.

He said the park is the only wild life territory in the country to have the Volta Lake as its borders.

He said the park is the historical home of diverse mammal species including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, waterbucks, bushbucks, species of duiker, primate species, black and white colobus, mona monkey, patas, green monkey, baboon and rare Diana monkey, porcupine among others.

Mr Napare said the facility is endowed with tremendous ecotourism potentials such as flora and fauna and other features.

The park, with a land of 3,478 kilometres, is the first wildlife protected area and is Ghana’s second largest park, after Mole, created in 1911.

It gained its park status in 1971 under the wildlife Reserve Regulation (LI. 720).
