Three people including the Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight Newspaper, Ken Kuranchie, are to appear before Supreme Court judges later this morning for alleged contemptuous publications and comments.
The remaining two are communicators of the governing NDC, Kweku Boahen and Stephen Atubiga.
Stephen Atubiga is alleged to have declared on Asempa FM’s current affairs programme, Ekosii Sen, that the party will not respect the Supreme Court verdict against President John Mahama.
Their invitation follows a similar one extended to Deputy Communication Director of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, who has since been banned from attending the court proceedings.
The judge’s action have been criticised by some members in the public including former NPP presidential aspirant, Dr. Arthur Kennedy.
Dr Arthur Kennedy said the posture of the Judges appears to undermine freedom of expression in Ghana.
He, therefore, described their attitude as “unfortunate”.
But President of the Ghana Bar Association, Nene Amegatcher in an exclusive interview with Joy News said people are free to speak their mind, but ought to do so within the confines of the law.
He noted that, it will amount to “preaching anarchy” if politicians take a stand that they will not accept the verdict of the court.
“Supreme Court so far has been tolerant, from our point of view. But people have taken their leniency to be their weakness, and it is about time that they flex their muscles,” according to the powers vested in them, “to sanction people and commit them to prison for contempt.”
