Building of UHAS to start next month

Yanjian, the Chinese Construction Company, contracted to build the School of Biomedical Science of the University of Health and Allied Science (UHAS), at Sokode near Ho, in the Volta Region, has begun work on the project.

It has started blasting rocks on the site of the University to level the ground for actual work to commence next month.

Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Volta Regional Minister, and some Members of Parliament from the region visited the site on Tuesday.

The 20 million dollar project, which is being financed by the Chinese Government, is expected to be completed in 18 months.

Yoang Jun Guand, technical head of the company, said the ground works would be completed by the end of this month, to pave the way for the construction of lecture halls, laboratories, libraries and other facilities.

He said the company was doing feasibility studies to find out if it could work simultaneously on two other sites.

Professor Fred Binka, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, said the company would also build eight semi-detached bungalows for lecturers while Social Security and National Insurance Trust would put up a 500-unit hostel for students.

Nii Afotey Agbo said: “this is a clear sign of our Former President Mills’ promise. We are happy, and we will continue.”

He appealed to the people, particularly entrepreneurs, to take advantage of opportunities that the establishment of UHAS would create and improve upon their activities.
