57 illegal small scale miners arrested in Kyebi

The Eastern Region Minister, Helen Ntosoh, is vowing to flush out illegal mining in the region.

This follows the arrest of fifty seven foreign nationals during a swoop last night at Kyebi.

This is the second in series of arrests of foreigners in the region for engaging in illegal small scale mining.

The 57 persons picked up are from Mali and Niger.

The illegal miners were this morning brought to the immigration service headquarters in Accra for screening and possible repatriation.

Speaking to Joy News, the minister said she will not relent until the illegal small scale mining activities in the region are halted completely.

“The swoop was done last night. …We have hundreds of them in the Kyebi areas. So we are not ending this operation,” she said.

According to her, some of the arrested persons are minors and they will all be screened by the Immigration and repatriated.
