Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, has bet his life on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances of winning the ongoing presidential election petition before the Supreme Court.
Describing the court case as a “complete waste of time and resources,” he stated unequivocally that the NPP will lose massively.
The ongoing hearing of the petition which entered day 29 on Thursday, saw counsel for the petitioners, Philip Addison, cross-examining the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.
Dr. Afari-Gyan’s cross-examination is seen as very crucial to both petitioners and respondents since he is the returning officer for the presidential election.
Many including the president have touted the presidential election petition as a boost of Ghana’s democracy credentials, but others especially in the ruling National Democratic Party (NDC) hold contrary views.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Friday, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu opined that the NPP is just “peddling untruth”.
He noted that, the maxim of equity enjoins anyone who seeks justice to appear with clean hands, but according to him, the petitioners lack it.
To buttress his point, Kwakye-Ofosu said the claim of connivance between President Mahama and EC to rig the elections which form the basis of the NPP’s decision to go to court is nowhere in their pleadings.
He found it surprising that the petitioners in court are now resorting to allegations of no signatures on the pink sheets, same serial numbers among others to support their claim of irregularities in the elections, when in fact, “they had alleged fraud against President Mahama”.
“The NPP lacks basic principle of conduct; they do not respect the basic tenets of decent behaviour,” he stressed.
The outspoken deputy information minister bemoaned the level at which Ghanaians celebrate mediocrity than the truth.
“Sometimes Ghanaians don’t want to be told the truth. We tolerate mediocrity; we need to hold people who seek public office to a high standard of conduct”.
Felix Kwakye-Ofosu maintained that the basis for the NPP’s court case in court is flawed.
