Accra, AUG 25, – As from this month, drivers convicted of motor traffic offences will attend a day’s school in addition to a fine of 150,000 cedis. Alhaji Mustapha Garba, Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, said this has become necessary because most of the drivers, who appeared before an Accra circuit tribunal and tested in traffic regulations, failed. Alhaji Garba was speaking at the opening of the first course for about 15 convicted drivers in Accra at the weekend. Most of the drivers, he said, were arrested for picking and alighting passengers at ‘no parking’ areas, obstructing free flow of traffic and overloading. He said most of the offences are due to high sales demanded by vehicle owners. Alhaji Garba said the objective of the course is to re-train the drivers in both theoretical and practical aspects of road traffic regulations. The course which is currently on daily basis is a pilot programme which would later be organised in all the regions. He called on all the tribunals and courts to have a uniform fine for traffic offences.
