Fire guts Kumasi’s second biggest mechanic hub

A number of shops and vehicles were destroyed last night at Kumasi’s second biggest mechanic hub, “Asafo Fitamu”.

The blaze started around 8:30 pm, and it took Fire Service Personnel about an hour and a half to quench it.

The fire is said to have started from a shop where car batteries are sold.

Correspondent Joseph Gakpo said the blaze burnt down a number of shops as well as cars which were packed around.

Fire men are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Some residents alleged the fire could have been triggered by the burning of refuse around the shop.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service is calling for reform of the Fire Precaution Regulations L.I. 1724.

According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Prince Billy Anaglatey the regulations do not have punitive measures to deter people from infringing on the laws.

This comes on the back of a warning from the acting Director of safety at the Fire Service Ebenezer Simpson that most markets in the country are prone to fire outbreaks.

Billy Anaglatey told Joy News it is time action is taken on the laws.
