University College of Applied Sciences to be opened in Upper East

A University College of Applied Sciences is to be opened at Kansoo in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

The university will offer courses in Information and Communication Technology, Agriculture Engineering, Education and Fashion and Designing.

Reverend Father Sebastian Aduko, a Catholic Priest, who disclosed this to the association of Bolgatanga, Nangodi, Bongo and Tongo (BONABOTO) members at a meeting at the weekend, said the project was the initiative of Reverend Father Moses Asaah Awinongya, a Catholic Priest based in Germany.

He said the university will mainly focus on the needy-but-brilliant-students, adding that some infrastructure had been put in place for the university to fully commence next year.

According to Rev. Fr. Aduko, the University of Development Studies (UDS) had been tasked to assess the facilities of the University College of Applied Sciences to enable it to gain accreditation and would very soon furnish the UDS with the checklist.

Currently the region had no university and students in the area rely on the UDS campuses in Navrongo, Tamale and Wa for their university education while others apply to universities outside the region.

Rev. Fr. Aduko entreated BONABOTO members and people in the region, to contribute either in cash or in kind, to support the completion of the university.

He urged people to take advantage of university and invest in private hostel facilities adding that management could assist such people to acquire land for the project.

Members of BONABOTO, particularly the regional executives, lauded the project and said it was a plus to the development of the region and pledged to visit the university site to see how they could help contribute towards its development.
